HydraFacial, medi-facial, carbon facial or chemical peel: which one suits your skin?

Clinic menus can be confusing. HydraFacial, medi-facial, carbon facial, Hollywood facial, vampire facial, chemical peel: they all promise glowing skin. In reality, each one is good at something different. This guide explains what each does, who it suits, and how to choose.
Clinic facial vs parlour facial
A parlour facial is mostly about relaxation: cleansing, massage, steam, a pack and often bleach. It can feel lovely, but heavy massage creams can clog pores, steam and squeezing can irritate acne-prone skin, and bleach only lightens facial hair, not the skin.
A clinic facial uses medical-grade products and devices chosen for a specific concern, such as oil, tan, dullness, dehydration or texture. It aims to change the skin, not just make it feel pampered for a day.
The options, one by one
HydraFacial
What it does: cleanses, exfoliates, extracts with gentle suction, then infuses hydrating serums, all with one device. Best for: dull or dehydrated skin, blackheads, first-time clinic facials, and a quick glow before an event. Downtime: none. Good to know: gentle enough for sensitive and acne-prone skin, because there is no squeezing by hand.
Medi-facial
What it does: a clinic facial planned on the day for your concern: a brightening peel for tan, deep cleansing for oily skin, or hydration for dry skin. Best for: regular monthly maintenance, tan, oily or congested skin. A great option for men too. Downtime: none.
Carbon facial (carbon laser peel)
What it does: a thin carbon layer is applied, then lifted off with a laser, taking oil and dead skin with it. Best for: very oily skin, open pores, tan and dullness. Downtime: none to a few hours of mild pinkness. Good to know: works best as a course of 4 to 6 sessions for oil control and pores.
Hollywood facial
What it does: a laser glow facial combining carbon cleansing and gentle laser toning for an even, camera-ready tone. Best for: weddings, receptions, engagements and photo shoots. Downtime: none; makeup usually the next day. Timing: 3 to 7 days before the event.
Chemical peel
What it does: a carefully chosen acid solution that loosens dull, tanned or pigmented dead skin, so fresh skin comes through. Best for: tan, pigmentation, marks after pimples, active acne and rough texture. Downtime: none for light peels; light flaking for a few days with stronger ones. Good to know: usually a course of 4 to 6 peels, 2 to 3 weeks apart.
Vampire facial (PRP facial)
What it does: your own platelet-rich plasma is worked into the skin with microneedling to stimulate collagen. Best for: fine lines, early ageing, acne scars and texture. Downtime: 1 to 2 days of redness. Good to know: results build over weeks, not overnight.
Skin polishing (microdermabrasion)
What it does: a diamond-tip device buffs off dead skin and lifts dirt from pores. Best for: rough texture, mild tan, back and neck polishing before weddings. Downtime: none.
Quick chooser
| Your main concern | Usually a good first choice |
|---|---|
| Dull, tired or dehydrated skin | HydraFacial |
| Very oily skin, open pores | Carbon facial |
| Tan | Medi-facial or chemical peel |
| Pigmentation or pimple marks | Chemical peels, sometimes with laser toning |
| Active acne and blackheads | Salicylic peel or acne-focused medi-facial |
| Wedding or big event | Hollywood facial or HydraFacial |
| Fine lines, texture, early ageing | Vampire facial or RF microneedling |
You do not need to decide before you come in. A good clinic will look at your skin and suggest the right one, and will tell you if you do not need anything more than a good routine.
Timing before events
- HydraFacial: 2 to 5 days before
- Hollywood or carbon facial: 3 to 7 days before
- Chemical peels: finish the last stronger peel at least 2 weeks before
- Vampire facial or microneedling: at least 2 weeks before
Never try a new treatment for the first time just before an important day.
Getting the most from any facial
- Use sunscreen every morning, or tan returns within weeks.
- Skip scrubs and strong actives for 2 to 3 days afterwards.
- Avoid steam rooms and swimming on the same day.
- Keep a simple home routine of cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. A facial cannot make up for a missing routine.
How often?
For most people, a maintenance facial every 3 to 4 weeks fits the skin’s natural renewal cycle. Treatment courses, such as peels or carbon sessions, follow their own schedule.
The bottom line
Choose a facial by your concern, not by its name. Glow and hydration: HydraFacial. Oil and pores: carbon. Tan and marks: peels. Events: Hollywood. Texture and ageing: PRP or microneedling.
