Oily skin in hot, humid weather: a simple routine that actually works

Why skin gets oilier in humid Indian cities, the mistakes that make it worse, and a simple morning and night routine for oily and combination skin.

In coastal and humid cities such as Surat, Mumbai and Chennai, oily skin is a daily battle. By afternoon the face shines, makeup slides off, pores look bigger and breakouts flare. The instinct is to wash more and moisturise less, but that usually makes it worse.

Why skin gets oilier in humid weather

  • Heat increases oil flow. Oil glands become more active as skin temperature rises.
  • Sweat mixes with oil, making the face look greasier and pores more likely to clog.
  • Humidity slows evaporation, so the film of sweat and oil sits on the skin.
  • Genes and hormones decide how much oil your glands make in the first place.

Oily skin is not all bad: it tends to wrinkle later. The goal is to control shine and breakouts, not to strip the skin bare.

Mistakes that make oily skin worse

  • Washing the face five or six times a day. Stripped skin often makes more oil and becomes irritated.
  • Skipping moisturiser. Dehydrated oily skin is common, and it looks dull and flaky while still being greasy.
  • Harsh scrubs and alcohol toners. They irritate the skin and can trigger more oil and acne.
  • Heavy creams, cold creams and oily sunscreens that suit dry winters, not humid summers.
  • Leaving sweat on the skin after a workout, a ride or a garba night.
  • Hair oil running onto the forehead, especially overnight.

A simple routine for oily and combination skin

Morning

  1. Gel or foaming cleanser, mild and soap-free. A salicylic acid face wash a few times a week helps if you get blackheads.
  2. Light, water-based moisturiser or gel, often labelled oil-free or non-comedogenic. Ingredients such as niacinamide help with oil and pores.
  3. Gel, fluid or matte sunscreen, SPF 30 or more. Sun makes pores and marks look worse, and modern gel sunscreens do not feel heavy.

Night

  1. Cleanse properly to remove sunscreen, sweat and pollution. If you wear makeup, cleanse twice.
  2. One active ingredient, as suits your skin:
    • Salicylic acid for blackheads and oil
    • Niacinamide for oil, pores and uneven tone
    • A retinoid such as adapalene for acne and texture, started slowly
  3. Light moisturiser if needed.

During the day

  • Blotting papers remove shine without disturbing sunscreen or makeup.
  • Rinse with water after heavy sweating, then pat dry.
  • Reapply sunscreen if you are outdoors.

Once or twice a week

  • A clay mask on oily areas (forehead, nose, chin) for 10 minutes.
  • Gentle exfoliation with a mild acid, not a grainy scrub.

Lifestyle habits that help

  • Wash pillow covers often, and keep hair oil off the face.
  • Clean helmets, caps and phone screens.
  • Change out of sweaty clothes quickly, especially for back and chest acne.
  • Choose oil-free, non-comedogenic makeup, and remove it every night.
  • Stay hydrated, sleep well and limit sugary drinks.

Clinic treatments for oily skin and open pores

  • Carbon facial (laser carbon peel): pulls oil and debris from pores and reduces oiliness over a course of sessions.
  • Salicylic acid peels: unclog pores and calm acne.
  • HydraFacial or medi-facial: deep cleansing and extraction without harsh squeezing.
  • RF microneedling: tightens the skin around large pores over a few sessions.
  • Acne treatment if oil comes with frequent breakouts.

Common questions

Should I use a moisturiser if my skin is already oily? Yes. A light, oil-free gel keeps the skin barrier healthy and can reduce rebound oiliness.

Can I skip sunscreen in monsoon or on cloudy days? No. UV light passes through clouds. Choose a gel sunscreen so it does not feel heavy.

Will my pores shrink? Pore size is partly genetic, but clean, less oily, firmer skin makes pores look noticeably smaller.

The bottom line

Do not fight oil with harshness. Cleanse gently twice a day, use a light moisturiser and a gel sunscreen, add one targeted active at night, and handle sweat quickly. For stubborn oil, pores and breakouts, a few clinic sessions can make a big difference.
