Scalp infection and dandruff
An itchy, flaky or sore scalp is not just uncomfortable, it can also make hair fall worse. We find out whether it is dandruff, an infection or an allergy, and treat it.

How it works
Flaking can come from several different problems. Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis are linked to a yeast that lives on oily scalps and causes itching and greasy flakes. A dry scalp gives fine, white flakes. Fungal infection (tinea capitis) can cause scaly, broken patches, and psoriasis gives thick, silvery plaques.
We examine the scalp to tell these apart, then use the right medicated shampoos, lotions and, if needed, tablets, along with clinic scalp treatments for stubborn cases. We also show you how often to wash and how to use oil without feeding the yeast.

Questions people ask
Does oiling help dandruff?
Left on too long, oil often makes dandruff worse. We will tell you what suits your scalp.
Can dandruff cause hair fall?
Yes. Constant itching and scalp inflammation can increase shedding. Treating the dandruff usually reduces it.
How often should I wash my hair if I have dandruff?
Usually every second or third day. Very oily scalps, and people who wear helmets all day, may need it more often.
