Alopecia (bald patches)
Round, smooth bald patches on the scalp or beard are often alopecia areata. Hair can regrow, and treatment helps speed it up and reduce new patches.

How it works
Alopecia areata happens when the body’s own defence system mistakenly targets hair roots in one area, so hair falls out in smooth, round patches. The roots are not destroyed, only paused, which is why hair can grow back.
Treatment aims to calm that local reaction and wake the roots up. Depending on the size and number of patches, this may include treatment applied to or into the patches, scalp therapies and home care, with regular reviews. Other causes of patchy hair loss, such as fungal infection or hair pulling, are ruled out first.

Results and how long they last
Fine, soft regrowth often appears within 6 to 12 weeks, sometimes white at first before the colour returns. Small patches respond best. New patches can appear in future, especially during stressful periods, and respond to treatment again.
What affects the cost
The cost depends on the number and size of patches and how many sessions are needed until hair regrows.

Questions people ask
Is it contagious?
No. Alopecia areata does not spread to others.
Is alopecia caused by stress?
Stress does not cause it on its own, but it often triggers a new patch in people who are prone to it.
Can children get alopecia areata?
Yes, it often starts in childhood. Children are treated gently, and many regrow their hair.
